Conceptual works by Julia Varela
InSitu curated work by the Spanish visual artist Julia Varela. Her series Hijacked, an award winning conceptual work, has been exhibited in a number of notable public galleries and museums, including Somerset House, London, La Casa Ensendida, Madrid; and KIASMA Museum of Contemporary Art Helsinki. A second work, No Crime, No Punishment, Without a Pre-existing Law, was also exhibited in the space as a separate installation. Varela is an artist working with ephemeral states through sculptural installations and films. She builds work from historical traces and digital media, where oral testimonies, found footage and translations are key elements.
InSitu manage a long-term sculpture programme for the public space at 30 Crown Place London EC2, showcasing work by recent graduates, emerging and established artists at regular intervals throughout the year. The art is a stimulus for users of the building, often challenging perceptions of what constitutes sculpture and how it is presented in public space. The programme includes a schedule of artist talks and related events.
